I) About the Program
The program provides an educational facility for young professionals in the Asia-Pacific Region and beyond to study and conduct research for the advancement of knowledge on environmental issues as they relate to the new sustainability paradigm. It focuses on the generation of new knowledge, development of leading-edge approaches, creative innovations and novel applications of knowledge. It provides advanced education to produce graduates and leaders with the knowledge and skills to understand the issues involved in environment and sustainable development and to offer innovative solutions.
The program is flexible and at the same time in-depth to a large extent, tailored to the educational goals of the individual student and emphasizes creativity, problem-solving, field-based learning, systems-oriented approach to sustainability as well as interdisciplinary in curriculum design.
The program consists of lectures, class discussions, field trips and intensive lectures from senior experts from other universities, UN Environment, and other international organizations.
Language: All professional courses are taught in English. Although, Chinese language courses would be offered additionally.
Duration and Certificates:
- 4 Years Duration: 1 Year for Courses, 3 Years for Research
- Graduation Certificate:
- Complete all the courses required.
- Finish the final dissertation.
- Success in the final defense.
- 2 papers published and retrieved in SCI(SSCI);
- or 1 in SCI(SSCI) and 1 in EI(CSSCI);
- or 1 in SCI(SSCI) with an impact factor of more than 3.5.

The applicants should contact the professors at Tongji University via website or recommendation by IESD according to their research interest during the application process. The acceptance letter by the professor (to be the mentor) is very crucial to get admission and the scholarship applied for.
During the study at Tongji University, all the students will conduct their research and other academic activities under the supervision of their mentors.
II) About UNEP-Tongji IESD
UNEP-Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD) was jointly established by Tongji University and UNEP since 2002. The institute has enrolled 525 students from 89 countries into the degree program. The Environment discipline of Tongji University ranks A+ among the 155 universities in China according to the recent evaluation by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

IESD alumni are currently active in international organizations (such as the World Bank, UNDP, ESCAP, etc.), national government agencies (such as the Chinese Ministry of Ecology Environment, the Turkish Environment, and Urban Planning Ministry, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security of Zambia, Egypt Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, Serbian Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ministry of Environment of Romania, Ministry of Economy and Trade of Indonesia, Ministry of Agriculture of Zimbabwe, Ministry of Energy of Liberia, Ministry of Environment of Ethiopia, etc., NGOs (such as WWF), academic institutions (such as Chinese Academy of Sciences, University of Wisconsin, University of Missouri, etc.), corporate departments (such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Bank of China, Michelin tires, etc.) and other industries.
